YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts are typically less than 1 minute long. According to the YouTube Creators website, Shorts are vertical videos that are up to 60 seconds in length and can be created using the Shorts camera in the YouTube app. The Shorts camera allows you to record multiple clips, add music, and more. You can also upload existing videos as Shorts by adding the hashtag #Shorts to the title or description of your video.

Here's partial transcript:

1:52 Now that you know what Shorts are, why should you use them?
1:56 People are watching more and more Shorts around the globe.
1:59 The YouTube Shorts player has now surpassed 6.5 billion daily views globally.
2:05 With its own separate viewing experience, think of it as an additional way
2:08 for you to create and reach new audiences who've maybe never seen your content before.
2:14 Shorts shouldn't have any major impact
2:16 on the performance of your regular YouTube videos.
2:18 And we're keeping your subscribers in mind.
2:20 So, we'll only send Shorts notifications
2:23 to subscribers who regularly watch Shorts content.
2:26 Now, let's walk through how to create a Short.
2:29 To get started, tap the Create button, then tap Create a Short.
2:34 If you want to add a song to record to
2:36 tap "Add music" to view a selection of tracks you can choose for free.
2:41 To record a clip, press and hold the Capture button
2:45 or tap it to start recording, and then again to stop.
2:49 You can tap Undo to remove the previous video clip you recorded
2:53 or tap Redo to add it back.
2:56 Tap Speed to change your recording speed.
2:59 And tap Timer to choose the length of your countdown
3:02 that shows before you start recording, and to choose where your recording stops.
3:07 A line lets you match up the clip you're about to record
3:10 with the previous clip.
3:12 You can also add filters to your Short.
3:15 Once you're done, tap Next to preview your Short.
3:18 Here, you can add music, if you haven't already
3:21 or text to your completed Short.
3:24 When you add music, you can adjust what part of the song you want to play
3:29 and its volume.
3:31 When you add text, you can use Timeline to add multiple text snippets
3:36 and control when text appears and disappears.
3:39 Once you're happy with your Short, tap Next to add details
3:42 like title and visibility.
3:44 We recommend adding #shorts in your title to help with discovery.
3:49 In addition to making something from scratch
3:51 we've made it easier for you to make your own version
3:54 of someone's video that inspired you.
3:56 So, you can also create Shorts using someone else's original audio.
4:01 To do this, from an eligible video, tap the Music icon
4:05 then tap "Use this sound" to create a Short.
4:09 Or, you can go to a video's watch page and under the video player
4:13 tap Create to create a Short.
4:15 Keep in mind that if you choose to use audio from someone else's video
4:20 the owner may delete their original content at any time.
4:23 When this happens, any Shorts that used the audio will be muted
4:27 set to unlisted, and will be scheduled to delete in 30 days.
4:31 But don't worry, we'll email you a reminder before your Short is deleted
4:35 so you can download a version that doesn't include the audio.
4:39 Outside of this creation process, remember that you also can upload
4:43 any vertical video 60 seconds or less using YouTube's regular upload process.
4:49 Finally, let's walk through some best practices for using Shorts.
4:53 Any content category can be successful on Shorts
4:56 but here are some short-form best practices that can help.
5:00 Focus on making the first few seconds captivating
5:03 to grab viewers' attention and keep your content snappy.
5:07 Remember that Shorts loop, so pace your content accordingly
5:10 and think of ways you can encourage replayability.
5:13 Try making your content relevant
5:15 by incorporating a trending moment, event, or song
5:19 relatable by using your authentic voice or showing a behind-the-scenes moment
5:24 or rewarding by making content that educates or entertains
5:28 or leaves your viewers feeling good.
